Nature Poem #3

Trotline on Austin Bayou

No moon,

but lantern light

glistens on wet line

sliding between quick fingers.

We two

with a smile

look across the skiff,

complete with simple acts,

as quiet as fish

beneath our passing.

Our eyes

focus on the line

that now shakes from a force

underwater, a long gleaming

of a catfish hooked, thrashing

and arcing its body in water dance

And then it's gone,

away somewhere deep.

We are left on a bayou

in lantern light.
